WPSQ4160TAAA General Electric Washer - Instructions

The first thought regarding the light rumble during the spin cycle is that the bearing was going bad. Many of the other inputs on replacing the bearing included the problem with removal of the Hub Nut. Only one article noted a set of assembly instruction for the washer is clipped onto the upper rear panel behind the control knobs, but I did not see this comment until later. Not being sure where to start with diassembling the washer, I began by taking off the control panel and to my pleasant surprise I found a neatly folded set of detailed instructions. Following the instructions, I proceeded to quickly disassemble the washer until I got to the HUB NUT. The Hub Nut is an aluminum, 1 -11/16 inch, left hand threaded problem. My tool selection is somewhat limited, so after unsuccessfully attaching it with grippers and vice grips, supported with the liberal aid of a rubber mallet and plenty of WD40, I went looking for something with which I could a better grip on the hub nut. The grippers and vice grips would slide a bit when hit with the mallet. Also since the space is very restricted, a large wrench could not be used. I located a 9-inch pipe wrench, and with the rubber mallet the Hub Nut finally loosened after just a few hits. I replaced the old bearing which appeared to be in fair condition. While replacing the bearing has not solved my noise problem, I thought that my experience with the pipe wrench benefit someone else in their efforts to get the hub nut off without using a chisel.

Got a new part in the Agitator Coupling Kit, as the existing part was worm down. Simply removed and inserted the plastic bottom, used a mallet to pound it down and it was finished. By checking a video, I felt comfortable in doing the repair myself. A greater feelings was knowing I didn't have to go out and buy a new clothes washer. Take off front. Take off top. Pull off agitator. Pull off agitator coupler, after removing bolt holding in place. Attempt to remove hub nut, no joy. Wound up cutting the nut with a Dremel tool and chiseling the nut off. Closer inspection revealed a bad transmission. Due to the cost of the transmission, we will continue to use the machine until it completely fails.

Removed the screws, pulled out the tall skinny thing that rotates, pulled out the broken part, ordered the new one, replaced it, (you have to push down until it snaps into place) Put everything back together and had clean laundry within 45 minutes. Anyone can replace this part.

took the two screws that holds the instrument selections off retreived the directions from inside this panel and followed directions step by step and removed the spline that makes the machine agitate, seen that the inside of the spline was smooth, ordered part and reversed operation in putting it back together.
p.s. make sure the refill shutoff hose is connected as we had forgot to do this and we ran water on the floor, had to take back apart and re-connect thehose .

ordering the part and fixing it myself with my sons help saved me a repair bill which I am sure would have cost me at least $75.00 more.

I used the "belt" technique to remove the agitator. It was difficult at first to remove but after a few tugs on the belts that were looped under the plastic bottom, the agitator came up. Then I unscrewed the bolt holding the coupler. The agitator coupler kit purchased from PartSelect came with a new screw so I replaced the old coupler with the new one and fitted the new screw in it's place. I put the agitator dasher back on and then it worked perfectly.

I reached under the agitator on two sides with my fingers and with one good upward yank the agitator came loose. I removed the agitator from the inside of the machine, I seen the Agitator Coupling was spinning in both directions so I felt that it may have been broken. I removed the one bolt hold the Agitator Coupling in place, I remove and inspected the Coupling and noticed that the spline was worn out. I cleaned the transmission spine that the Coupling slides over with a wire brush while using a shop vacuum to catch any loose debris. I installed new Agitator Coupling Kit slipped the Agitator back inside the machine over the coupling and pressed it down until it snapped into place. Job done. Machine works great.

Slide rope beneath agitator.
Pull up with good force..agitator will separate from coupling.
Remove screw from coupling.
Slide coupling off.
Slide on new coupling.
Install screw included with the new agitator (Don't use old screw. The new one is a specialty part designed for new coupling)
Slide agitator back down over coupling.
Done

I noticed that the agitator would spin without any resistance and must be stripped. I pulled the agitator straight up and it came right off. I then used an open end wrench to remove the bolt securing the agitator coupler to the metal spline. It came right off and was obviously stripped. Upon receiving the new coupler, slipped it straight on and tightened the coupler. Placed the agitator on the coupler and tested the washer, it worked. Very easy. My wife was ready to buy a new washing machine and I fixed it with a six dollar part.

Easy as it gets. I did this repair while playing Wii with my 8 year old and cooking supper... Still no more than a 10 minute fix.

Place a towel on one side of the washer so you won't scratch it.

Tie a loop of rope around the middle of the agitator between the upper and lower fins. Wrap the other end of the rope around a 2x4 ( I used a level), or anything similar and wind it around until the 2x4 is pulled down level with the top, keeping one end on the towel.

Yank the other end firmly a few times, and the agitator will seperate from the coupling. I had to snatch it pretty hard.

I removed the 7/16" bolt from the coupling, pulled it off the spline and replaced it with the new one.

The agitator slid right back into place with no trouble, and it is good as new.

What seemed like an expensive repair, or even the need for a new appliance was essentially removing one bolt and a replacing a $6 part.

Popped the agitator off, removed the bolt, pulled coupler straight up. Reversed steps. Done in under 5 mins.

My husband remove the agitator and found that it was worn. I googled the problem and one of the websites that came up was PartSelect. My husband watched the easy to follow video and had me order the Agitator Coupling Kit. It arrived in just two days. It took him 15 minutes to install and I started washing immediately. It cost us $13.22 and saved us $800 to $1200 if a new washing machine would of had to be purchased. I was very disappointed that this washing machine was broken since it is the second GE washer I have had in this house and the home is only 11 yrs old. I went to the Parts Select website and used the repair information to diagnose the problem and order the part. The part was about $12 including shipping and arrived in a few days. Agitator came off easily, but the agitator coupling was a little bit hard to remove. I have to yank it hard to be able to remove it. Putting the new part in is a bit hard too. I had to use a hammer to put it in. (with a piece of wood in between). Tried it with a small load and We're back in business. It was a pleasant experience to do business with you guys.
