Compressor Start Device Kit 8201799

First I called a repair man to diagnos the problem. He said it was the starter relay and gave me a quote for $300.
I looked online and found the part at PartSelect for $55 delivered.
I took the back panel off the fridge, unplugged the appliance to stop the flow of electricity (forgot to do that once) and after ensuring the electricity was off, I cut the wiring to the starter relay. After pulling back the wire casing and reconnecting to the new started relay the compressor turned back on and the fridge started cooling again within about an hour.
This took roughly 30 minutes to complete and saved me around $250!

First I turned off my refrigerator, called for service, and had the problem diagnosed as a bad start relay. The repairman checked the compressor to see if it too was bad. The compressor was fine so I ordered the part I needed from PartSelect. After receiving the new start relay and overload from PartSelect, I unplugged the refrigerator, pulled it out and removed the screws from the lower back panel with the socket set and screwdriver. I removed the white self contained start relay box from the compressor by gently prying it off with a flat edge screw driver. I carefully disconnected the red and white wires from the broken start relay with pliers and followed the step by step directions that came with the replacement parts (the start relay and overload were separate components, not inside a self contained box like the original part). I proceeded to attach each part to the compressor, reconnect the red and white wires, and attach the new cover. I vacuumed out the area around the compressor and the condensor coils, plugged in the refrigerator, and turned it on. It worked immediately. I screwed the back cover on and pushed it back in place. Within 24 hours the ice maker was nearly full and I saved $225 by doing it myself.

Pulled cardboard cover off back of ref to access the compressor compartment. Unplugged appliance, and pull the start device and overload off of compressor. Replaced both parts received from Partselect.com. Refrigerator works great now.

This problem first accrued when the unit was under warranty and the repair person told me this would happen again. This technician told me how to troubleshoot the problem and sure enough the Compressor Start Relay was bad again. For starters I moved the refrigerator out from the wall and cabinets. I unplugged the wall cord from the receptacle. I removed the screws, with a ¼ inch spin-tight that held the backing in front of the compressor compartment. I disconnected the two wires then pulled the Start-Dev PS991485 out and it rattled, a good sign the relay was bad. I looked up the Part on the Web Site and ordered the replacement relay, I thought. When the package arrived I found all the parts for the entire Starting and over Temp Protection circuits along with a new plastic cover box. This was a very good experience and I saved maybe $250.00 in repair costs by doing it my self, along with the replacement instruction that came with the parts.

Removed back cover, noticed the start relay was a Klixon figured it was bad(they don't make a good relay);
Checked voltage going to compressor: 115V;
Checked ohms: C-S-R 4.3-4.2-4.5;
Checked ground: open;

Replaced start relay.
Compressor fired right up when plugged in.

Replaced the start Kit , cleaned the condenser coils with a two ft length of 1/2" copper tube taped to the vaccum hose, vaccumed the area at the compressor( this took about 1/2 hour) replaced the cardboard back . (corrected)

The refrigerator works fine. Thanks
