removed metal strap around motor housing then remove the 4 screws holding top motor cover on, then removed the 4 screws that hold gear cover in place, remove long gear that is driven by the motor gear, then with ring pliers remove ring off long drive shaft and lift off worm gears. once all gears are removed --removed all the old grease ( do this to get all the metal shavings out from the failed gear) repace the grease in the gear housing and reassemble in reverse order

1, Removed trim piece (1 screw) 2, removed cover (4 screws) 3, removed speed switch assembly (2 screws) 4, removed gear cover (4 screws) 5, removed and examined 2 worm gears for wear. Gear cover was badly cracked, don"t know if it was caused by a previous repair or by heat, as old cover is plastic. Received new parts and installed them, 2 bearings, 2 worm gears, 1 new cover of diecast metal and a new gasket. All repairs made with a #2 phillips screw driver. My wife then made bread, and it preformed flawlessly.

Bought a KitchenAid Pro Series stand mixer from Sam's Club about five years ago. The transmission gears stripped. It is failry easy to replace but you need to replace the worm gear and the pinion at the same time. Make sure all the old grease is removed completely to ensure no old shavings reaming in the transmission housing. Also, if you have a fiberglass transmission housing, inspect the housing closely to indetify any hairline fractures and do not fill the transmission assembly with too much grease becasue you need room for the housing to breathe when the unit is in operation. If you fill the housing too much and tighten it, it "WILL" crack the housing. You want enough gree to keep the asssemnly lubricated but not too much that when you run the mixer that it expands and cracks the housing.

sat on the kitchen table and with a screwdriver started to disasemble the mixer,hardest part was taking snap ring off (easy after you buy snap ring pliers)as gears were lifted off noticeable wearing was present on all parts. the bearing housing on the gearcase was broken lose, the only major expense. the other parts are not expensive so i decided to renew all parts. glad i did felt proud of myself when job was done. would do it again Joe

Removed the lid of the mixer. Cleaned all grease and removed the worm gear. Installed new gear and packed with new grease Installed lid and checked worked perfect. Easy repair.

Remove the top cover. Loosen the circuit board and remove the gear case. Remove the retaining clip on the gear shaft and remove the gears. Clean the old grease out and relube. reassemble in reverse order . Not a bad job at all.

after numerous calls to kitchen aide and ka repair centers - i decided that their remedy was to sell me a new or refurbished model -- so i decided to try the repair myself - why not - the appliance didn't function and their fix again was close to the price of a new one --- the fix - remove the band (small screw in back --- 4 screws hold on the top of the mixer - remove them and pull off the top -- the gears are at the front -- four screws hold the top in place- remove them and pull off the cover -- this is where it gets interesting - it's a little messy with the grease -- but clean out as much as possible --
the toughest part is then removing the retaining clip --- (a tool is avail at numerous hardware stores that will make it a bit easier about $20. ) but pry the clip up and slide off top -- remove gear - clean out completely - remove all old grindings -- replace gears -- add grease and reverse order... great fix -- even with purchase of pliers it was cheaper than any offer from kitchen aide....

the hardest part is removing the retaining ring (didn't buy pliers)after that it is very easy, remove ring, top gear, center pin, bottom gear,worm gear(was removed first)the grease is pretty nasty,clean off the old grease and put it all back the way it came apart,with new grease.And then PRAY !!!!!!! I took all the grease out of the top of the mixer. Saw that the gear was worn. When the new parts came I put as much grease in as was in before. Put it back together and it worked like a champ.

remov5 screws then snap ring thenn 4 screws then reploace with new parts and put back together
