Ice shoot flapper door was sticking
Gentlemen,
Many thanks for the help in repairing my GE refrigerator. From the web site and videos, I determined the problem with the flapper on my ice maker was a bad solenoid. I ordered the part from you then followed the step by step instructions to install it. It made what seemed to be an intimidating job rather easy.

Ice Dispenser door would not close after use
I followed the directional video on "PartSelect" website. The video was very easy to follow and showed exactly how to easily replace the dispenser door solenoid assembly. I knew it was the solonoid assembly because the I could see the plunger that controls the opening/closing motion of the dispenser door sticking inside the old solenoid. The "PartSelect" website is very user friendly and very easy to use. The part ordered, delivered by standard delivery, arrived the day after it was ordered. I only wish all repairs could be as straight forward and easy as this one, thanks to "PartSelect" and some limited mechanical/electrical knowledge on my part. This was absolutely a "do it yourself" repair at a very significant savings over using an appliance repair service.

Flapper in door for ice dispenser would not close.
I repaired IAW the PartSelect video. Very easy. One thing that should be mentioned in the troubleshooting process, is to check the retention spring on the flapper. That spring could come off and also cause the flapper not to close.

Water dispenser would not dispense.

Flapper Door was not opening wide enough to allow ice to flow down the chute. The flapper door was staying open with ice jammed in it.
Contrary to the visual instructions I could not remove the frame around the control opening nor did it turn out need to be removed. The control panel was easily removeable with a small screw driver inserted in the two outer holes at the bottom. Once this was removed I removed the four screws removing the panel with the chute and giving access to the solenoid. The three screws holding the solenoid were rusty and I applied some liquid wrench on each to help with the removal while I cleaned around the area. The solenoid was easily removed but the screws needed replacement which I obtained at my local hardware. Once the solenoid was attached again I replaced the other parts as they were removed and the flapper door is now working as it should. It took all of about 15 minutes for the repair but two days to figure out I did not have to remove the opening frame. Somewhere in the "Repair Film" it should be mentioned that for some Models removal of the "Opening Frame" may not be necessary just proceed to removing the Control Panel.

Solenoid plunger rusted and did not reset when not energized so the dispenser flapper would stick open.
Took apart freezer door dispenser mechanism and replaced solenoid assembly in its entirity. Easy fix once the fix to the problem was identified.

Flapper on ice dispenser wouldn't close after dispensing ice.
When I clicked on the part to see it's description the pop up window included a youtube video on how to install the part. The video was right on the mark. Very easy installation. Phillips screwdriver was the only tool needed. Repair performed in less than 15 minutes. I have used this site before and it has been extremely helpful in saving me money by doing the repairs myself instead of paying an arm and a leg for a repairman to do it.

Flap in shut where Ice comes from Icemaker to outside of door would not open causing ice cubes to build up so when you opened the door they fell all over the floor.
Simple fix with information furnished online with the Dispenser Door Solenoid Assembly. Unplug fridge, remove selection panel by pulling out gently at the bottom until it releases then unplug the 3 connectors, remove next panel by unscrewing the 4 corner screws, then remove the solenoid by loosening the top screw and removing the two on the bottom, wipe all clean and reassemble in reverse with new solenoid hanging piston over ice door flapper lever first then sliding it into solenoid as you move it into position. Easy fix....$35 hopefully extended the life of a faithful older fridge for a few more years since it work/looks new.

Freezer "flapper" would not shut causing condensation
I reviewed several You Tube repair videos. Not all of them were correct even though my model and brand were specifically mentioned in the videos. Use You Tube with a grain of salt. After sifting through the you tubes, I distilled the information by looking for consistencies. The most inconsistent information was on how to remove the plastic bezels. Once that was figured out, the repair was very easy. Upon removal, I inspected the solenoid. It was very rusted and was no longer capable of pulling the mechanism closed after it had (successfully) opened the flap. The new solenoid fixed the problem in a flash.

Ice dispenser door failed to close, affecting temperature in both freezer and refrigerator - temporary solution of jamming towels down ice delivery chute provided a partial remedy to temp problem but required opening door to access icemaker
Watching the outstanding, detailed video provided the insight and confidence necessary to place the part order and complete the repair. The most difficult part of the procedure was removal of the front panel that identifies the buttons for various functions (i.e. water, ice, crushed ice, etc). Note that this panel differs slightly from one model to another so the process may be slightly more difficult than pictured in the video. Our refrigerator has removable decorator panels which I removed first (both above and below the dispenser section), an additional step I strongly recommend for owners of models with such panels. To do so, a male Torx socket is required to remove screws at the top of the door, allowing the metal side panel on the left to be removed, prior to sliding the decorator panels out. Now onto removing the front panel as in the video - although the video repairman completed this step without any tools, it must be CAREFULLY pried by hand. Experience has taught me that older plastic parts that "snap in" often become fatigued and suffer stress fractures if not breaking off entirely. This is a fairly rigid piece of plastic on our unit that wasn't cooperative until I coaxed it from one (left) side with a large, flat screwdriver and a little twisting motion to get things started. Once I was able to pop one corner loose, the other 7 connecting tabs were relatively easy to remove (there are 8 total - 2 on each side as I recall). The rest of the process was simple, exactly as demonstrated in the video. Thanks SO MUCH for all of the expertise and high production values that made this repair "a piece of cake". Incidentally, by simply removing the old solenoid ASAP, the door snaps shut, sealing off the freezer compartment while you wait for your new part to arrive.

Bad solenoid - ice flap didn't close
The video was clear and the repair looked easy. My only problem was that the trim piece that had to be removed first was very hard to get off. I called PartSelect and ask if I was doing it correctly. (I didn't want to damage anything else) The person I talked to said that they don't provide technical service help but that he'd look at the diagram of the refrigerator to see if he could help me. He was able to confirm that I just had to apply more force to get it off. With the aid of a putty knife I was able to pry it off. After that I followed the video instructions and it was easy to make the repair. Things went back together easily and the problem was resolved.

Ice dispenser flap stopped opening and caused water dispenser line to freeze
Pull fridge away from wall and unplug it! Turn water valve off. Open freezer door and stuff a small rag/washcloth in hole where ice exits to keep the cold air in. There are 3 small holes on the bottom of the control panel, stick a small Phillips head screwdriver in the 2 outside holes and pop the control panel out. Pull the 3 connectors out of the back of the control panel. Set the control panel aside. Unscrew 4 Phillips head screws holding the plastic control panel bracket/ice cup/light bulb. Set this piece aside. Unscrew 3 screws that hold solenoid. Mine was completely rusted. Throw the old solenoid in the garbage. All the screws I removed were rusted. Go to home depot get some stainless steel screws that are the same size as the rusted screws and some spray rust inhibitor for metal and a tube of anti-seize. Wipe everything down with 1/10 solution of Clorox/water(q-tips help to get the tight areas)to get rid of all the MOLD. Spray a light coat of rust inhibitor on your new solenoid and let it dry. Coat the metal plunger of your new solenoid with anti- seize lubricant. Replace solenoid and all other screws that are rusted with stainless steel screws. Put the plastic bracket back in with 4 screws. Plug the 3 control panel wires back in and pop the control panel in the bracket. Pull the rag out of the ice chute, turn water back on, plug fridge in and push it back against the wall. Your done and hopefully the extra steps will help your solenoid last longer! Hope this helps!
