The old coupling wore off
Thanks to the good advise of those who did this before me ,I know I need a very slender wrench to get between the screwed on base of the coupling and the copy of the base of the blender.
I tried to file one myself, but the metal was too weak. Because i had the size (from what I filed), I measured and knew i needed a 7 MM wrench. I bought one at the parts store and ground it thin enough to slip into the small space and from there it was a five minute job.

Blender coupling cogs were broken
Remove blender jar to get to drive cog. Use a 1/4 to 3/8 flat open-end wrench to hold cog shaft then turn the cog with your hand CLOCKWISE to loosen. Screw new cog gear on COUNTERCLOCKWISE hand tight. Reassemble your blender and you're good to go. It takes a very thin flat wrench but even if you have to buy a set the're not very expensive. Good luck.

broken rubber coupling on blender base
A very flat wrench or needle nose pliers was needed. I could not get the nut unscrewed with what I had so I had to mail the unit to a service center for repair. They were able to use the part I had purchased but if I had known I wouldn't be able to do it I could have saved a little money in the shipping I had to pay when I ordered the part.

Drive coupler had disintegrated due to age
Followed the instructions included.

Nothing could have been simpler-I just inserted a flat bladed screwdriver between the coupling and the blender and pried up in about 3 different places. The old coupling came off and left no residue on the threads.

It took me longer to clean off the particles of rubber left on the blender from the old part crumbling than it did to replace the coupling.

Easiest appliance repair I've ever done!

coupling (base unit to mixing blade) desindegrated
As others have said, secure the motor by carfully inserting a scredriver thru the bottom of the base unit, with pliers turn the old coupling clockwise
(opposite of normal) until loose, spin it off, spin the new on counterclockwise, done.

The plastic drive coupling had worn out and broke off.
It was more difficult than described in the directions. They said to pop off the drive coupling with a straight edge screwdriver. It took me quite a while and a lot of strength to finally get it off. I thought I was going to break it completely. BUT, it did come off and I saved myself a lot of money by doing it myself.

The drive coupling lost several teeth.
Removed the coupling as shown in the video and on the instruction sheet that came with the part. Put the new coupling in place. Noted that the coupling has left hand threads. No problems.

Old coupling had degraded into little pieces
I followed instructions to the letter. I used a long, flat blade screwdriver and slowly pried around the old coupling until it finally came off. The only hard part was having to continually work at it and I wasn't sure I was doing an adequate job but I was afraid of breaking something. But it did come off and I cleaned the metal filings with a dry toothbrush and screwed on the new coupling. wala!

Problem removing old coupler
Instructions indicated turning the coupler and gently lifting it with a screwdriver. However, in attempting to do that several minutes without success had to use the screwdriver to pry the old coupler off and in doing so the rubber section separated from the metal. It was removed with pliers. Once off installing the new coupler was accomplished quickly.

blender chewed up the drive coupling
i followed the instructions enclosed with the part. I used a screw driver as directed, raised the metal part upward rotating it a quarter turn until it came off. i then screwed the new drive coupling on counterclockwise until it was secure. I plugged in the blender and it works perfectly, just like new.
