This problem can be caused by 3 different part failures. Timer, thermostat or heater. After contacting a service repair shop I was told that most often it is the thermostat. The cost of the repair would be at least $115. To much for an old refer. So I ordered the part from Partselect for $33. and put it in myself. Step1 cut the power to the refer. Step2 remove ice maker if you have one. Step3 remove base and back panels in the freezer. Step4 the coils were badly frozen so I used a hair dryer to thaw it out. Would have waited a long time for it to thaw out otherwise. Step5 The thermostat is clipped on to copper tubing next to the coils. Unclip it and cut the wires close to the thermostat. Strip the wires and wire nut the new thermostat. Clip it back on to the copper tubing. Put it all back together and start it up. It's over a week know and no problems. Note: We have whirlpool appliances that are over 16 years old. I have repaired the washer, oven, and now the refer with parts from Partselect. Good company. Always received the correct part within about 3 days from ordering. If you are able to do the work yourself you can save big bucks and keep your appliances running longer. Good Luck

With the help of the website I was able to verify that the part I removed (in the area of the clicking sound) was probably the part required for replacement. I ordered it, installed it... IT WORKS (I knew it the moment I plugged in the power cord and heard the compressor kick on). Saved me from buying a new fridge or calling a repairman. I'm a 58 year old woman with no appliance experience. I watched the videos and installed the part without any trouble. The fix was easy. I jacked up the unit and put on blocks. I used socket and ratchet removed the wheels. Reinstall new ones and let off the blocks.

Took the old fan out and put the new fan in.

Remove back cover of freezer compartment; Remove old fan assembly, new fan terminals did not exactly match old one so I had to remove one of the terminals from old fan and attach it to new fan/ then install new assembly and repaced freezer cover

Tried cleaning drain and defrosting and wire around heater element into drain line. Kept freezing up. Noticed I could not get the heater to come on ? Resistance through heater was 34 ohms. I knew thermostat was ok because temp in fridge and freezer ok. So the only things left were Bi-Metal and defrost timer. I cut wires from Bi-Metal and used water seal wire nut to install. I removed timer and thermostat tray from fridge area and removed defrost timer and installed new one and reinstalled tray. Instructions said to make sure timer not in defrost cycle, but did not say how to tell. So I finally moved the timer wheel on back of timer to a position that the old one had and reinstalled and compressor came on and started running. I checked the freezer compartment later that day and heater was on and ice melting and water in drain area.

Time to repair was because I had to "thaw" out the refrigerator. The parts replacement were pretty straight forward. Even though the exploded diagrams were very detailed, you have to think like someone trying to build something cheaply. Hidden snaps holding on the plastic parts etc.. The one last glitch, the instructions start off as Version 1 and 2, and then change to Procedure 2 and 3. Except for those minor problems, even thing from ordering the parts,diagrams,delivery and instructions very good.

I did the repairs in the following order: First, replaced the Defrost Timer Kit. Let it run for a day. However, no change with the refrigerator defrosting the freezer. Second, I replaced the defrost timer kit. After about an hour or so, the fan in the freezer turned off for the first time in a very long time. However, the defrost cycle wasn't running long enough to defrost the mess the freezer had created so I manually ran the defrost a few times. However, things were quite back to normal just yet. I then decided to check to see whether any water was dripping onto the drip pan and found out it wasn't. I took apart the compartments in the freezer and removed all the ice that had formed underneath. I then ran the hair dryer onto the drip hole in the back of the freezer. After about 25 mins or so, I used a small 6-7 in copper wire which I made from an old hanger using a wire cutter. I then ran this wire through the drip hole several times until the water started to drip onto the pan once again. I then dried up the mess from the ice and put everything back together in the freezer. Since then, my freezer has been working like new. I spent about 40 bucks on the parts plus total time of 2 1/2 hours for all the work I performed. Hope you have the same success that I did.

Talked to local appliance repair tech, who explained how to manually turn timer with a screw driver and listen to the switch go from on to off.

Unplugged the refrigerator then removed two vertical screws on the very back back of the control panel (the ones with the washers). Do not remove the four other vertical screws in the panel. The front plastic plate on control panel snaps off and there are two horizontal screws under the plate. Remove them and the control panel will drop down allowing access to the light switch. Unplug the two wires (one black and one white) from the old switch. Discard the old switch, snap the new one into place and reconnect the two wires. Snap the front plastic plate back into place, plug in the refrigerator and you are done! Problem solved with a new $16.00 switch and saved at least $75.00 or more from an appliance repair call. Was very simple once I found out where the defrost timer was located. I had a friend walking me through trying to find the location on the phone. Not all models have them in the same place. Once the part was located all I had to do was remove the cover, unplug the old one and plug the new one in just the way the old one came off. The black wire was easy to locate on the old and just matched it up. Put the cover back on and plugged it in. It was no time till I started feeling it cool. Checked both top and bottom with thermomater and it was where it should be within 12 hours. I am happy and using it again. Was almost ready to throw it out. Did not know it was so cheap to fix one. Nothing anyone can't handle. If this woman can do it anyone can.

I tried to just replace the cover rather than the whole unit but it was impossible - the cover would not go/stay on. I tried to remove the old unit completely but it would not unplug it was practically fused to the back of the fridge and the liner was cracking. I ended up breaking the cover and jerry rigging it over the bulb to prevent items in the fridge from being able to touch. Bad solution.

After finding an almost obsolete part( thanks PartSelect!) the installation was rather easy. Remove the back panel of the freezer and vent with a screwdriver and a nut driver. Disconnect the three wires, green, white and red.Remove motor from mounting and replace with new motor. I had to make a slight adjustment to the ground wire on the new motor that required adjusting the position of the contact-no big deal. The motor fit perfectly. Popped fan on and assembled. 20 minutes max.
