Refrigerator would not cool, start relay was shot.
I ordered the three parts from the diagram for my model. The new relay was not at all similar to the old one (3 connections instead of 2, new cover. Seareching for about an hour on the web I found some blogs that helped. In case anyone else asks, here is the answer. The old relay had two connections - white wire to one and 2 orange wires to the other. The new relay had three connnection - they are numbered on the relay, attach as follows - White to #3, orange from capacitor to #2, orange from harness to #1. Blue stays with overload. I am surprised that the so-called experts had no idea what to do, but a simple homeowner was able to figure it out!! Fridge works perfectly now..
Well first of all, I was afraid that the compressor was shot and I'd need a whole new refrigerator (ack $1000!!!). After googling/reading, I figured out that the starter relay mounted on the compressor was burned out. (loud click as thermal cutout shuts down compressor.) So, I ordered a replacement part, overnight shipping. Unfortunately, this was on a Friday night, so I had to figure out how to keep the fridge cold all weekend (til Tuesday). I'd already moved frozen stuff to a chest freezer, but the inside of the fridge compartment was now nearly warm at this point, so I got 10 lb of dry ice. That got things cooled down initially. Well, turns out that with a short piece of wire, you can momentarily jump across the terminals of the relay and kick start the compressor. It then runs until either the defrost cycle stops it or the thermostat kicks it off. Anyway, all weekend, every six hours or so, I turned off the fridge for a minute to cool down the overheated, stalled compressor, then turned it on and jumped the terminals to start it up. Kind of a pain, but saved lots of food. Overall, the $30+$30 (shipping) for the part saved me from having to get a new refrigerator, so I'm quite pleased. I've used Part Select many times now. Very fast service and shipping, great website/database. I shop around and every time end up buying from them again.

Both Sides Would't Get Cold
Wasn't sure which switch was bad so I ordered all three. Thought maybe compressor was bad, but it was the overload. I removed plastic cover on compressor, unplugged wires and slid overload off of prongs (pins) attached to the compressor. Same with the second switch, both are attached to the compressor. Saved buying a new fridge for $1400. 00. Easy , cheap job!
I was about to waste $1000 on buying a Refrigerator. Took 1 mins to search on google "Refrigerator doesn't work". Found a video on youtube, showed a step and step video to solve my problem. Order the part $50 and it took me less then 5 mins to install it. =)

Refigrator was not coolling
Pull the refigrator out, unscrew the back plate and the pull the relay & overload out; and put the new one in. It was that simple. The video actually helped me a lot too.
Extremely easy install. Just popped off the cover located on the side of the compressor. Noted placement of the wires on the overload and relay. Took a small screwdriver to slide both from the electrical pins on the compressor...take care doing this. Unplugged the wires, plugged the new components to the wires and installed to the compressor. Plugged in the frig and the compressor came on. Not sure why these went out to begin with but the fix was extremely easy and saved me the expense of a repair man.
where the wires crossed at the start relay, 20 years of vibration allowed them to short out and burn out the start relay ..since i have 2 identical fridges i switched the run capacitor to determine it was'nt bad too...ordered a start relay wednesday nite and got it friday morning...cold fridge by noon...good service and the part was exactly the same as the original....

Fridge won't start
When you plug in the fridge it will begin to make noise, but never get cool. When you open the door it will stop and will not turn back on.
RELAY-STRT (PS11770133) is listed as one that can fix the problem, but the installation video does not match my fridge.
I've replaced the capacitor (PS11757023), the compressor start relay (PS11740412), and condenser fan (PS1957416) and none of them have fixed the problem.

I can't find the start relay on my fridge...could it not have one?

Hello Dan, thank you for your question. Every fridge compressor has a start relay and an overload. Sometimes they are made into one part or available separately. Your start relay is under the black square cover that is mounted to the side of the compressor. You can replace the start and overload as a combination by ordering PartSelect Number PS11740412 or the start device by itself, by ordering PartSelect Number: PS11770133. There is also an installation video that will show you how to access and replace the start device. That can be found by searching the pt number PS11770133. I hope this helps!

I test for resistance on my start realy and only got 7.1 ohms is that normal and what should be the reading? Thanks

Hello Chris, thank you for your question. Unfortunately, we do not have the reading specs for this unit. But we do have instructions to test. Find the "s" and "m" plug-type terminals and the "L" slip-on terminal. Position the relay on the floor, counter or table so the "s" and "m" terminal are facing down. Insert the multi-tester with one probe on each of the "s" and "m" terminals. Set the tester to zero ohms. Turn over the relay and after a clicking sound the reading should change to "infinity" if the relay is functioning. Turn the unit over again and place one probe from the "s" terminal to the "L" terminal. The tester should read "zero" again and when the relay is turned over, there should be no change in the reading if the unit is working properly. If it isn't, you'll need to replace it. This model has been sitting in storage for 5 years after working ok previously in the home. After installing the unit in my home, the lights and compressor fan works, but unit does not cool. What should i look for. Would the relay-start unit need replacing or should i look for something else?

Hi John, thank you for your question. When you are having temperature problems in your fridge, there are a few parts that could cause the issue. You can use a multi meter to test most of the parts. Make sure you cut power to your appliance before doing any repairs or tests. First you should test your defrost thermostat. Place the thermostat in ice cold water for 2-3 minutes after removing it from your appliance. It should be reading 0 ohms to be working correctly. Another part to check would be your defrost heater. Remove it from the appliance. It should be reading anywhere between 0 - 50 ohms to be working. You could check your temperature sensor. To find the correct reading for this part you will have to refer to your tech sheet that comes with your appliance. You can usually find this tech sheet behind the bottom grille of your fridge on either the right or left side. These are the most common parts that cause this issue in your appliance. So it is suggested you check them first. I hope that helps. Good luck with your repair.

My mother has this model refrigerator and it's very confusing. She is having problems with the freezer one day it is working like it should and the next day she looks and her ice is melting and then later on in the day it will start working again. This has been going on probably around 3 weeks now. She has to put her food in the chest freezer until this freezer is fixed. I ordered the capacitor that she will receive this friday but i was wanting to know if you know of anything that could be causing this to happen ? It's like it has a shortage . Lights and the refrigerator side all work. Any information will be appreciated.

Hi,
I need to replace the Start Relay and the Start Cap on this model. Due to clicking, but everything works fine. Bought in 2009. How do I know if this model uses the two separate items (W10920279 , WPW10662129) or do I need the combo part relay/overload item ( WPW10189190)? It makes a difference if I get into the back and find out I have to order aan additional part. I am 70 and cannot do the repair but one time to complete. I saw all the Fix-It videos (Great job by the host) and saw this as an easy fix IF you order the correct parts first. Please respond as I don't know how long this will keep running. I cannot afford a new ($1700.00) reefer. Thank you Very much......Gene MD

My Whirlpool fridge has an embraco compressor, and the part i need is the start/run relay (fsp 1108143) which i copied directly from the part. I'm in a quandary as to whether to order that part or else the Whirlpool part (wp2262185). My suspicion is to go with the former, since i feel the compressor has been replaced somewhere along the line, hence the original Whirlpool part isn't the one to order. I don't know the history of the appliance, since we adopted it when we bought the trailer in 2017. Thanks....frederick

You want to go by the information found underneath your model number because that is all the current and updated information directly from your manufacturer, and we can guarantee you that the part you are getting will be correct.
