Removed water filter as I have a whole house filter system.
Just removed the filter and used my hand to attach the water filter bypass cap....did not even need to turn off the water first.

water leak
After drying the floor by running a dehumidifier for a week I simply replaced the valve. I hope that the new one (second one in five years) is more reliable than the original design. I purchased a water leak detector and will test it annually to minimize the potential for extensive water damage.
