Handle Broke next to screws because improperly tightened at installation to switch handles
Removed the old handles with a phillips bit and 20V drill for freezer handle. Popped out plug with screwdriver on bottom screw of refrigerator handle and used star bit for this one screw on refrigerator door handle and phillips for other 2 screws. Positioned handles one at a time on proper door and then manually tightened all the screws with phillips screwdriver so as to not crack the handles. Used the 20V drill set on a torque setting for the star screw. After screws were in, i then put in the new screw cover over the one screw on refrigerator door and I was finished.

The original white plastic refigerator door handle broke on the top thin Attachment point. It was designed with a too thin under stength thickness just before the two upper screw holes.
The replacement was installed without difficulty and very quickly. I used a Philips and Torex screwdrivers. It only took a few minutes to accomplish. However, The design of the replacement handle is identical to the original's. So, it too has the same weak point. It is just as likely to break in the same spot as the original did. Also, this was the second replacement part that I had to order and pay for before I received the needed correct part. The first part that I incorrectly ordered and received was a clear plastic inner door. Was confused because this part was not pictured on the G E website showing replacement parts for this refrigerator. Both parts orders were received very quickly, even though I used normal shipping..

How do i install the new door handle
For model number GTH18GBDDRWW
Hi Jerry,
Thank you for your question. This handle is just unscrewed from the top and you slide it down off the bottom mounting screw for your refrigerator door. It looks like for your freezer door both the bottom and top and screws to unscrew. We do not have a video specifically for this part, but this is generally how the installation is done for the fridge portion: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=079K_vVSI7A. I hope that helps. Good luck with your repair.
