The function of the oil pump is to deliver a steady flow of oil (8-50 ml per minute depending on the model) into the groove of the guide bar which is then carried by the chain around the whole bar. The throttle engages the motor and oil pump to work at the same time. The oil reduces friction and heat that can occur while cutting.
