I simply placed the filter in front of the fan. The knobs just popped on.

Removed the old knob and put the new one on.

I very stupidly set a very hot pan down on a couple of plastic knobs and it melted them.
I set the new knobs down on the spindle that holds them and snapped them into place--a matter of two minutes tops.
