I have a KitchenAid OTR microwave, model YKMHS120ES3.
About a year ago the range hood light went out. Replaced the bulb and began working fine. Then it became intermittent. With a tap on the light cover it would begin working again. Eventually quit working altogether. At the same time the light worked intermittently, when closing the microwave door, the microwave would not work as it wouldn't detect the door was closed. Opening and closing the door a little harder would fix the problem. And this also was intermittent. We finally unplugged the unit when it began running only when the microwave door was open.
What parts are needed to fix these issues and is there any instructions we can get on how to repair?
For model number YKMHS120ES3
Hi Lisa,
Thank you for your question. If the lights are not operating correctly in your microwave, then you will need to check the door switches to see which one is causing the issue. Inspect the door hooks that trigger the door switch to verify they are activating the switch mechanically. If they are, you will need to test them with a multimeter for continuity. Set your multimeter to the Rx1 setting, depress the actuator button and touch the terminals with the probes. You should receive a reading of 0, indicating that there is continuity. If your switch does not have continuity between the terminals, you will need a replacement door switch. If you have any questions, please let us know. We are open 7 days a week. We look forward to hearing from you!
The overhead range bulb was burnt out. Once the bulb was changed, the night no longer turns off or dims. What switch would I need to replace to fix this?
For model number YKMHS120ES5
Hi Derek, thank you for getting in touch. According to our research, it seems the light button on the control panel might be stuck or faulty. We would suggest inspecting it. If it is faulty, you might need to replace it. The part number is PS11775198. We hope this helps.
The nightmare was that this microwave is installed under the cabinet....in order to get to the light bulb I had to pull out my stove then squeeze into the space between the stove and counter....my old microwave light bult was much easier to change.....Shame on Whirlpool for making this so difficult.....must be a better way to cover the light bulb so that we do not need a screwdriver to remove the door to get to the light bulb
Ordered top & bottom micro-switches and mounting plate parts. Internet reviews could not find specifics if the issue was due to a top/bottom or combination of micro-switch or mounting plate failure. Pulled the plug. Removed the top vent assembly cover held in by 2 Phillips screws inside the vent. Removed the control panel held in by 1 Phillip screw at the top vent assembly area. Lifted control panel upward to release the catch and moved it off to the side - didn't disconnect any leads. Used a Torx bit to remove the door switch mounting plates at the front and pulled the plates through the opening from the control panel. Documented the wire color code connections, the top plate uses 2 micro's with one using both the closed & open contact. Installed the respective micros on the mounting plates and worked backwards with the wiring and removal steps. Once completed, the open/close sensing has worked every time.
