Large ring gear - delrin - split in two
  • Chris from Burlington, CT
  • A Bit Difficult
  • 1- 2 hours
  • Nutdriver, Socket set
Laid appliance on side - removed top sheet metal cover and bottom sheet metal cover. Broken delrin ring gear was on bottom of bottom cover (housing). Gear had broken off of its hub, which also was the sprocket chain drive for both acme screws driving the compactor platten. Motor had to be loosened so that the chain could be removed f rom the old sprocket hub, and the new delrin ring gear - with new sprocket hub attached - could be mounted on its fixed spindle. With new delrin gear/chain sprocket mounted, the motor had to be spaced and tightened to allow 0.010 inch lash between the gears. The only instructions included with the new gear was how to do this - by placing a piece of paper in between the pinion gear on the motor, and the new ring gear, and then tightening the motor into place. This was done, the sheet metal covers were re-installed, and the compactor works just fine. There is a design flaw in the original (KitchenAid) engineering of the gear, however, and I expect that in the next four years this will probably happen again.

Compactor failed to compact.
  • edward from Duxbury, MA
  • Difficult
  • 1- 2 hours
  • Nutdriver, Screw drivers
This is the third time that I have had to repair the actuator on this unit. The first two times I did it, it was a really simple fix-two screws and done. And it was inexpensive. However, obviously this fix didn't last because the piece of spring metal kept breaking. Fortunately, Kitchen Aid redesigned the actuator to use a new pedal m echanism and a different type of switch. This new actuator seems much beefier and I expect it will last for the life of the unit. The bad news is it is a pretty complex fix. Disconnect power, slide unit out, remove the top, remove the front panel, remove the switch and the old actuator, drill two new holes in the front panel and install the actuator, reinstall the panels and the new kick plate, slide the unit back in, level the unit and attach it to other cabinets, reconnect power. It was about as hard to do this part install as it is to install a new compactor. If you can install a compactor, you can install this part.

The panel got bent
  • Steven from Elk Creek, CA
  • Really Easy
  • Less than 15 mins
Took the bent one out, put the new one in. The repair was not the story, the story was that we ordered the part on Monday afternoon and it was delivered on Tuesday! And the shipping was less than $8.00. Fresno to Elk Creek in less than 24 hours for that price was amazing!

stripped pinion gear
  • jeff from lincoln, AR
  • Really Easy
  • Less than 15 mins
  • Nutdriver
I took the hex screws out with a nut driver and then punched out the role pin in the pinion gear (the little gear) and replaced it along with the large gear, less than 15 minutes. I was surprised how fast (day and a half) the parts were here.

I changed the front panels from the original beige to stainless steel
  • Walter from San Rafael, CA
  • Really Easy
  • Less than 15 mins
  • Screw drivers
The repair was a breeze, a piece of cake, a walk in the park, a day at the beach. The part arrived quickly and installation was fast and simple. A week earlier I had the misfortune of ordering these parts from another supplier. One of the parts obviously was not correct, so I called customer service. Although the operator was polite, she insisted that the part I received was the right one (even though it was 2 inches too narrow). I looked up the part at PartSelect.com and ordered it. It arrived the following day, and fit perfectly. Thanks, PartSelect.com.

Hinge bracket between refrig and bottom freezer had broken. This is the part which keeps the door from opening too far.
  • Mary from Tillamook, OR
  • Really Easy
  • Less than 15 mins
  • Screw drivers, Socket set
After I did the prep work of removing the items inside the door the project took less than 15 minutes to get the repair job done. 1. Remove the door by taking off the top hinge cover on top of the door, remove the three screws with a socket wrench, remove the plastic gasket under the hinge, left door up and off the lower hinge pin 2. Pla ce the new bracket on the freezer door hinge pin, flange side down 3. I had to place an extra spacer washer, which I had on hand, on top of the hinge bracket 4. Replace the door on the bottom hinge pin 5. My husband held the door in place as I reattached the top of the door with the plastic spacer and 3 screws I had removed 6. Replaced the plastic gasket and hinge cap on the top 7. With the door reattached, I removed the existing screw under the door directly below the new hinge bracket, lined up the hinge bracket to the screw hole and attached it in place. Much to my surprise and pleasure, the door swings perfectly, stopping where it should with the door shelves loaded! Thank you PartSelect for having a part that would work for my 16 year old refrigerator even though I had to add a washer shim to make the new part as thick as the original.

Unit cycled when on switch operated and would not stop until Off switch was activated.
  • Gerald from Wickenburg, AZ
  • Really Easy
  • 15 - 30 mins
  • Nutdriver, Pliers, Wrench (Adjustable)
Replaced the limit switch. This did not alter the problem. Took off the On/Off/Start switch and dissasembled. I found the the Start switch was stuck in the on position. I reassembled the switch mechanism assuring that the Red "ON" indicator moldings were correctly positioned and reassembled everything. The Compactor now works properl y. Need to add "Check the Start switch" to diagnosis.

The compactor was loaded with too many wine bottles
  • james from Milton, MA
  • Easy
  • 15 - 30 mins
  • Screw drivers
At best it is advisable to load just one at a time and covered with newspaper etc., In this case someone put in three bottles with out covering with heavy newspaper etc.and for some reason one rode out and to the side. Crushing the side of the metal trash container. This pinned the container against the side of the compactor body and behi nd the front rails. Using a lot of pulling and some nifty pry bars and two hours of prying and squeezing we got the container out( see attached photo )The replacement container was ordered on a Sunday night and arrived Tuesday morning. Removal of the existing front panel ,foot pedal and door switch was easy and installation on to the replacement container was a breeze with a little orientation required to line up the switch and pedal in the right configuration. 20 min tops and that was with five kids helping ;)

Directional Switch lever broke
  • Dick from Penn Valley, CA
  • Easy
  • 15 - 30 mins
  • Nutdriver, Screw drivers
The part was suppose to come with instructions, but did not. However, it was easy after reading the comments on-line, and discovering that the front cover had to be removed in order to expose the whole switch and wires. I did drop one of the mounting screws down the front of the compactor and was not able to recover it. So, I had to ma ke a trip to the hardware store for a replacement. They couldn't match the remaining screw but I found 2 similar ones with lock washers and nuts that worked just fine. I saved a $90 service charge and probably double the cost of the switch by doing it myself.

bought new gears, pulled it out and replaced the gears. wasn't very hard. I did expect a jenn-air to be better built (plastic gears really!) but for 30 bucks it is all better.
