Single Solenoid Water Valve

Unplugged refrig and shut off water supply. Removed cardboard backing on back of refrig. Then removed water lines and power plug from old water valve. Removed screws holding water valve on refrig chassis. Attached water lines and power plug to new water valve. Then repeated the above steps in reverse order. Took a max of 30 mins to install the water valve and worked properly when plugged in refrig and turned water supply on.

Since we will be working with water and do have an electrical connection nearby, it will be best to unplug the refrigerator to do this repair. It should only take about 15-20 minutes to complete the repair so your contents in the refrigerator should be fine.

1-SImply pull your referigerator away from the wall and unplug it.

2-Locate water supply valve and turn off water to refrigerator by closing the water valve.

3-Remove two 1/4" screws that hold the black "cardboard" cover at the bottom right corner of refrigerator.

4-Then locate the two 1/4" screws holding a light blue valve assembly, again in the bottom right corner of refrigerator. Remove screws and assembly will be loose.

5- Remove water line from the top of the valve assembly you just loosened.

6-Then unscrew the large plastic nut on bottom of valve assembly.

7-Unplug the electrical connector that is on the top of the valve assembly.

8-Install the new valve by reversing the installation. Plug in electrical connector, tighten water line on bottom of assembly, re-attach/tighten main water line on top of assembly- and re-attach valve assembly to refrigerator and re-install cardboard cover. Turn on water supply to refrigerator and check for leaks. Don't forget to plug the refrigerator back in.

Thats it! Problem solved!

Both water valves on this model have small rubber seals in them. When the seals wear, they stick and do not open, preventing water flow. To replace;
- unplug
- remove back bottom cover
- unplug valve
- remove valve
- detach water inlet and outlet (put a towel under first)
- install new valve in opposite order

I checked all areas such as water flow in the door and to see if any of the lines from the water valve was clogged. After finding that the lines were clear and the water flow was good through the door. I also checked the Ice maker to make sure it was going through its cycles. I also noticed the valve was making a loud noise when it would try to put water in the Ice maker. I did check the line to the Ice maker inside the refrigerator to see if the water had frozen in the tube. I removed the two screws that hold in the valve and reconnected the water line and the line heading to the lce maker and now my Ice maker is fully functional and making ice like always. The repair was easy and anyone could do it. Also remember to unplug appliances when you work on them, just a safety reminder.

Since I didn't have any water to both dispenser or cube maker, I assumed I needed the Double Solenoid Water Valve. I first ordered and installed the double valve, but it did not solve my water supply. I then ordered the Single Solenoid Water Valve and installed it per instructions. These valves are easy to install and do not take over 15 minutes. The water is now flowing to both dispenser and cube maker and everything is working like new. I probably would not have needed to buy the double solenoid valve, but since my refrig was about 20 years old, I left it installed.

The repair would have been very easy, however, the replacement valve had a change to the outlet size from 5/16" to 1/4". I had to build a reducer coupling (brass). I have been searching for a quick connect poly reducing union that is leak free. I had to order one as it is not a standard item at Home Depot, Lowes, etc. As we stand now, I have ice cubes and cold water through the door. Found a crack in the 5/16" original line at the connection. Cut that section away and put the coupling in. Had to really tighten up on the brass fitting to stop any minor leaks. It has been leak free for 4 days, but I will still put the quick connect part in when it arrives. BTW Parts Select does not stock the quick connect reducing union.

Easy repair, matched parts from this web-site, removed several screws for each valve assy, installed each item, had water & ice !!!!! Both items $90 w shipping, we went to dinner with the money saved from not calling some a tech to repace them east items.

The main water valve did not open when we wanted to get water out from the refrigerator, nor did any water get delivered to the ice maker when it called for water (to make ice cubes).

Replaced the bad inlet water valve, and we are back in business....

Nut drivered off the old on, Disconnected the water line in and the water line out. Installed both water lines onto new valve and attached back on to refridgerator and presto magic water and ice again.
