Called a friend that lead me down the right path so i did a search for the part's and found this site. The trouble shooting that outher's had done was the same as mine, I descovered that the coil's in the freezer had frozen up complety. They are located behind a plasic cover in the freezer area, it had frozen up due to the Defrost heater
... Read moreelement being defective, when i took it out it was black and burnt looking,It is located at the bottom edge of the coils,2 bolt's and a plug in on each side. That is probally the only part i needed but i went ahead and replaced the sensor and timer also.The sensor wires in the freezer( located on the very top of the coils) had to be cut and the new ones spliced in, only 2 wires and easy access. I also put shrink wrap on the splices to protect them from mosisture. The timer was located in the fridge area by the temp. control knobs. 2 small bolts and a plug in was all on it. It's been 5 day's and so far so good. The worst part was defrosting the frozen coils. This was done with the wife's hair dryer and a couple towel's to soak up the water. Don't just let the water go down the drain hole because the tray that catches it will not hold all the water from the frozen coil's. Just a reminder, don't forget to unplug the unit when working on it. Hope this help's and was very easy install, Cost about $125 in part's and a couple hours of labor(did a good cleaning while it was eampty for the repair) Good luck.
Fridge was not really cold. Fan was working at back of freezer. Romoved the drawers and back panel of freezer compartment. Melted ice with a blow dryer and collected water with a towel so that it would not overflow the drip pan. Installed the new defroster units with 4 screws and the easy plug in wiring harness. Bingo! Per the trouble shooting guide on the home page of the website. I suspected the defrost timer was bad because ice had heavily accumulated on the back wall of the freezer compartment and the temperature inside the refrigerator was warm. First, I removed all the freezer racks. Then removed the (4) screws on the back wall in the freezer c
... Read moreompartment. I then removed the ben from the ice maker to allow more room. Once I saw all the ice, I unplugged the refrigerator, and used a hair dryer to defrost ( it took about an hour to get it all). Once the ice was all gone, I then moved into the refrigerator compartment and removed the top shelve. This allowed me more room and access to the defrost timer which was behind the back panel. I used the trouble shooting guide to test the old timer prior to removing the new one from the package, (just in case I needed to send it back). Through this test I determined that the timer was bad, it wasn't the heating element or the t-stat. It was very easy to access, I removed the two knobs and lifted up the panel. I located the defrost timer and removed the screws as directed. I replaced the timer just as I had removed it, plugging in the electrical terminals per the removal process. I then reversed the order and put the panel and top shelve back on. Once all complete, I then moved back into the freezer compartment and replace the back panel and then the ice ben. I plugged it in and haven't had a problem since. This site has saved me a tremendous amount of money, a service contractor quoted us $300, to determine the problem. I ordered the part and it was sitting on our door stoop the next morning.

... Read more inside the appliance. Removed temp knob, plastic cover, light bulb and 1 screw to dislodge housing and unplug power. 4 screws to remove temp control unit and timer from metal housing. Took images before disconnecting connectors.
Replaced parts, plugged power and re-screwed onto housing. Put back the housing, bulb, plastic cover and knob.
Plugged in the appliance and turn on the temp control. NOTE: defrost timer needs to be adjusted with flathead to enable the appliance. Once the timer was enabled, unit is functioning normally.

... Read moree I looked a bit harder at the accessable part of the timer after intallation and saw what looked like a dial. I turned the dialclockwise and immediatly the compressor turned on. I have not found any information as to how much or little to turn this dial which obviously is an adjustable cycle setting so I just turned it all the way, so far everything is working alright.

We tested defrost heater already and there was no problem with the heater. How to test the defrost timer? Thanks.
Hi Christine,
Thank you for the great question,
Step 1: Unplug the refrigerator.
Step 2: Disconnect the wires from the timer and timer motor. Remove the timer from its brackets by backing out two retaining screws.
Step 3: Test the defrost timer with a VOM set to the RX1 scale. Clip one probe of the VOM to each defrost timer -- not motor -- wire, and turn the timer control screw shaft until it clicks. If the defrost timer is functioning, the meter will read zero. If the needle jumps, the defrost timer is faulty. Replace it with a new one of the same type.
Step 4: Connect the new defrost timer the same way the old one was connected.

Freezer cold, but refrigerator warm
Hi Jim,
Thank you for your question. There are a couple of parts that could cause this issue. Your defrost timer is one of them. I would also suggest checking our your defrost heater, defrost thermostat, and your run capacitor. You can test all of those parts with a multi-meter. Good luck with your repair.
Replaced the defrost timer,plugged it in and the refrigerator will not start.It was running before I put the part in.The issue was it was running all the time.Any suggestions?Part replacement part number was wr9x489.Thank you your website is amazing.
Hi Stewart, Thank you for the question.I suggest testing the relays on the compressor. You can check for continuity with a Multi Meter. If there is no continuity they will need to be replaced. Hope this helps!

My refrigerator is running all the time and things in the freezer are not freezing completely.The outside of the freezer section near the door has a hot strip that runs most of the length that i can get to. i have went through your site and read reviews and watched the videos. everything points to the defrost timer.
i get the "hot strip" so i'm thinking the defrost heater is good.
the hot strip goes off and on, so i'm thinking the defrost thermometer is working.
i guess i just want to be more than 90% certain that it is the timer before i order one.
i haven't done any testing yet. is there a quick way to test the timer to see if it is working correctly?

Hi Mike,
Thank you for your question. The defrost timer does fix the issue the majority of the time. This device acts like a clock. It continually advances and alternates between activating the cooling cycle and the defrost heater. To verify if this is the part that is causing the issue, you will need to test it with a multiemeter. If it tests fine, then you will need to check the run capacitor and the defrost thermostat. Wear do you find the defrost timer before I start breaking covers? This is a bottom freezer, is the timer inside the temp controls?
Hi Garth, thank you for the question. Your model does not come with a defrost timer. The main control board, part number PS2364946, manages the functions of the refrigerator, such as cooling and defrost times. It is located inside the rear cabinet cover. We hope this information helps!

I have tested the new defrost heater & the defrost thermostat ,both have continuity. I'm thinking it might be the defrost timer . My freezer gets to about 25-35 degrees .What is strange is only the lower portion of the condenser coils freeze up and the upper half does not. Is it the problem or is there something else causing this issue with my refrigerator & freezer.....

Good day.I had a refrigerator GE model tfx20nw.
i had a problem with the timer and the thermostat bimetal.
the parts are being replaced but the freezer refrigerator still with the same issues. therefore im interested buying the replacement parts.
im interested getting the timer and bimetal thermostat but i would like to know if all the timers have all the same cycles 6/ 8 hours frozen period and 30 min of defrozed cycle and also if i need a bimetal thermostat of the same size proportion of the original piece.
the fridge has a new bimetal but i would like to know if it is a problem by using a bimetal of different size or brand.
the bridge is kind of old so its very hard to find the original GE pieces and i would like to know your recommendations and what GE parts should i get for my model.
