Replacing the dryer drum drive belt

Very difficult for one person, trying to get the belt engaged into the motor pulley and the idler pulley at the same time. Trying to overcome the tension of the heavy spring on the idler was the main problem, while coping with the small working space with the drum in place. Solved all the problems by removing the drum (for the 3rd time) and making a piece of wood to wedge in against the outside wall of the machine to hold back the spring loaded idler. Then slipped the drum back in place and gently slid the belt around the drum. Then reached in under the drum and slipped the wood piece out while making sure the belt remained on the pulleys. If I had the wood idea at the start, it would have been about a half hour job. Good luck, and don't pinch your fingers.

This is the second time that this has happened with my dryer. The first time I replaced the thermostat and fuse, and it worked for a few years. This time I replaced the element and thermostat at first. Still nothing, then got the fuse; and walla just like new. Of course I lost a screw somewhere down at the bottom of the dryer, so there is only one holding the thermostat in place. Also I took off the front and cleaned out the lint traps; both times it was loaded with crap. Probably why it stopped in the first place.

Repair went fairly smoothly, except the wiring connection on the purchased timer was incorrect. Luckily I had the old part to match the new timer.

A. Unplug dryer

1. Removed timer adjust knob by pulling straight out.
2. Remove two screws holding the switch to the front panel.
3. Remove two screws on top o f the dryer control panel.
4. Grip the control panel on left and right sides.
5. Pull the panel forward.
6. Optional: take pictures of timer and wiring.
7. Survey the electrical connections from the old timer to the machine.
8. Remove one electrical slip connector from the old timer, and place it on the corresponding lug on the replacement timer.
9. Proceed, one at a time, until all connectors are moved to the new timer.

Grown daughter did the repair following instructions on your site........Unplug, take screws out of top by lint filter and with putty knife pry up top panel and lean back. Unplug elec. harness in front corner. A screw on each side of front panel removes that. Get old belt off and then we vaccumed all the lint from under and around drum. P ut new belt around drum making sure not twisted and pull pulley as shown to make tight......... would have taken less time but we vaccumed all the lint from under and around the drum. Anyone could do this......

After watching the great install video, I followed his lead and within 20 min had my dryer door fixed. This dryer was bought in 1986 and I really thought I was looking at buying a new dryer. How wonderful that I could fix it for less than $11. Easy to find web site, easy to find part, great instructions and fast delivery!
