This appears to be fix the most common breakdown on older Whirlpool/KitchenAid fridges. A burned out compressor start relay switch. You can tell if that's the problem if the cooling fan works fine and the compressor tries to switch on but immediately makes a loud click and turns off. Old relay also rattles when you disconnect and remove it. Replacement kit designed for multiple models but relatively easy to install. Instructions ok. I found it was easier to reconnect the wires first before installing the new relay.

Both freezer and refrigerator stopped cooling
Compressor Start Divice kit, I took off back lower panel with the 1/4 inch nut driver, on the compressor their was a wire hook that held the starter in place used my plyers to unhook, pulled the unit off plug the new unit in reappled the clip it was so easy I had to exame it severl to time to make sure that was all their was to it. put the cover back on and turn the refrigerator on and it has work great, I did not install the Bi-Metal Defrost Thermostat it was not needed.
Clicking from underneath the fridge, and compressor engaging only intermittently
I diagnosed the problem as a bad relay. I detached the two sets of wires leading to the relay and compressor, then pulled the relay off the compressor. It rattled and small bits of detritus fell out from inside of the relay. The new relay came the next day. It did not rattle. It was identical and I simply did the reverse to reinstall.

No Cooling
I noticed the fan was running but not the compressor, they are wired in series meaning the compressor should also have power and you should hear the compressor. Could not hear compressor coming on, removed the white relay attached to the side of the compressor and could hear loose pieces shaking in relay. Ordered new relay and plugged it in, took less than five minutes. Very Easy. Thank you Partsselect

fridge stoped cooling
Please read stories that apply to you on this web page, cause it can help you save big bucks. My fridge is about 2 yrs old and one morning it simply stopped cooling. I heard the clicking noise coming from the back bottom of the fridge as if condenser wanted to start up. Pulled the fridge out took the back cover off and heard that same noise coming from the little black box ( start-device) attached to condenser. Went on this same web page and found exact same device for $49 whereas if I did not know much about electronic repairs, traditionally the repair guy would have had charge me at least couple hundreds. So do it here first, it wont cost you much. Replacing this part is so simple, pull the device out away from condenser by hand as if you were unplugging an extension cord and plug the new start-dev in. SIMPLE. Make sure to take pic with ur phone to wire it back properly. (ONLY 2 WIRES)

was not cooling
I unscrewed the bottom of the back panel and heard a clicking noise from the compressor starter. it was held in by a clip, flipped it to the side pulled the starter off and disconnected the wire harness. pushed the new one in reconnected it . And it worked. I have very little experience and it was very easy.

Smelled Electrical Burning / Smoke
Removed cardboard back from refrig. Found source of smell/burn. Removed part. Ordered several replacement parts as the diagram was not clear as to which part would be needed. New parts arrived, matched with old. Cleaned carbon from contacts, installed new part. Cleaned dust from refrigeration coils, installed back. Returned unused parts.
I removed the back panel off the fridge and removed the old start relay device by simply unplugging it from the compressor. I had to detatch two wires and a capacitor from the device. The old start relay was definitely bad and you could tell by shaking it. Plugged in the new start relay device, reattached the wires and capacitor and was done. Fridge is perfect now! Very simple!

No-Refrigeration
Read the instructions that came with the relay/overload.
Determined wich of the relays and overloads in the kit supplied was needed on the refrigerator.
I removed the cover for the lower part of the refrigerator to inspect the wiring and motor. I removed the switch and removed the wiring from it. The wiring just plugs in. When the new switch arrived, I just reinstalled it to the side of the motor and the refrigerator has been working fine ever since.

Refrigerator is cold but evaporator fan runs constantly. Condenser coil is clean. Any help would be appreciated.
Hi Steve,
Thank you for your question. The evaporator fan is used to draw air over the evaporator coil and circulate the cold air throughout the fresh food and freezer compartments. If the evaporator fan does not work then the control thermostat or sensor may not correctly sense the temperature and the compressor will continue to run longer than normal. The fresh food and freezer compartment temperatures will increase as well. The evaporator motor and fan are located in the freezer compartment and you can normally here the motor or feel the air movement when running. If you suspect that the fan motor is not running properly, then turn off the refrigerator and remove the evaporator fan cover. Verify that the fan blade is secure and that the motor is not seized. You can check the motor for continuity with a multi-meter. You can also verify that power is applied to the motor when the compressor is running. This is a live voltage check and should only be performed by a qualified person. I hope this helps. Thank you and have a great day!

Compressor not coming on at all. Should i be able to measure voltage on the power connector that plugs into the compressor start module? 2 wires, red and white, i get no voltage there? Everything else seem to have power, inside light, lights on front freezer door will come on when switched to on. I have continuity on the module when testing with meter, just seems no power is getting to it.

The start device and the capacitor can be tested with a multi-meter to determine which is at fault. Hope this helps!
After hurricane irma, plugged refrig back in after power restored. No cooling. Everything is working, lights, fan, etc. Compressor is hot but not running. How does one check the starting capacitor and the starting kit device. Or is the starting device working since the compressor is getting voltage as it is hot to touch?

My fridge cools but then it stops and warms up like the defrost thermostat or control board but i replaced them . It comes on when i hit the side of the fridge and blows cool air and did that before i replaced the parts above. As of last night it came on only for a minute then shut down and would not come on when i hit the side. As of this morning it was about 45 degrees.
