Speed surging, especially on low setting
Remove one screw on rear cover. Note wire colors coming from pcb at top of assy.
Replace electronic speed control pcb. You will probably have to loosen the two screws holding the brass end plate assy to install new pcb.
Note the number of turns you loosen, so you get it back in the same position. Tighten locking nuts on screws.

Mixer only had 2 speeds with the smell of electrical burning.
This mixer was given to me 8-10 yrs ago with only 2 speeds (cant believe i waited this long to fix it). Repair went good, wasn't sure what i should replace so i replaced Control board, control plate, governor, grease in the gears and the transmission gasket. I first took any and ALL measurements for any screws on the control plate, this will help when you set your mixer speeds when its all back together. When installing the new governor i used a 10mm socket and a mallet to seat it all the way till it stops on the set pin. installed the new control board, with thermal grease on the back of the plate(very important). Didn't need to replace the grease in the gears, but i figured since i was in there id replace it. (No smells and all gears work) I used it to ground 5lbs of elk into burger (speed 4) after repairs and it worked great. Still have about 15lbs left to do and itll do it with out braking a sweat. Maybe i should open up a repair shop to fix these suckers...lol its that easy. What really helped with the repairs is the youtube video from Partselect. Second to none with a step by step on how to replace and repair just about anything on your mixer. Good deal, if i need to replace anything else i know where to go! Thanks

BOARD-PHAS POINTS WORN AWAY AND 1 BRUSH STUCK AGAINST COIL
Took out stuck brush assy cleaned it and the coil and reinstalled it.
Googled internet to see how to best remove and replace Board-Phase as no instructions came with parts. Actual work replacing parts took only a few minutes. The main work was tearing down the working head to get to the parts and putting it back together. Also had to google how to adjust speed control plate to the correct speed. It helps to have patience and instructions.

Mixer was overloaded, and began to smell hot and make noise. Did not recover when load was removed.
I disassembled the mixer using a YouTube video as a guide. Disassembly was easy, as everything was held together with pins and threaded fasteners, and all electrical connections were plug-on.

Cleaning out the old grease was messy and time-consuming. I used a putty knife, screwdrivers (used them like small putty knives in the crevasses), paper towels, and finally, small cloths dampened with alcohol. After about a hour (maybe 90 minutes) everything actually looked like new.

I originally diagnosed the problem as the plastic gear loosening up from it's hub, so I ordered the complete gear tower assembly. It turned out not to be the problem- the gears were fine. With the gears removed to eliminate load, I applied power and saw that the original symptom was still there.

Further research turned up that this symptom is more likely a failed field coil, or possibly the phase control board. I ordered both from PartSelect. In the meantime, I tested the armature by measuring the resistance across the brushes as I slowly turned it by hand. At every angle, the resistance was about 7.5 ohms. Nothing lower, and no opens, so I'm pretty sure the armature is OK.

The phase control board arrived, but as of this writing, the field coil has been back ordered for almost a month. While I waited, I tried a partial reassembly of the head with the new board, and it worked! This weekend, I'll finish reassembly of the motor unit to the base/gearbox and calibrate the speed governor. In addition to the new gear tower and phase control board, it has new grease, seals, and both side levers (tilt and speed control) that had lost their knobs some time ago.

Hopefully it will be ready for another quarter century of use!

Mixer would not turn on
Pulled off end cover. Used the how-to video's to show me how to remove the (3) components (watch out when it comes to removing the spring). Removed all (3) components (one issue was the black cardboard seal, which because of its age broke. Hindsight tells me that I should have purchased a replacement seal along with the (3) new parts.
Fixed the broken part of the seal with scotch tape). Installed all new parts with the help of the video's and put the cover back on. Even with the new parts, the mixer would not run. Come to find out, after I took it to an appliance repair person, that someone had pulled both brushes and put them back in improperly. I could not find a how-to video that showed me how to de-install/re-install the brushes properly. I assume that was because new brushes were no longer available for purchase. At any rate, when the brushes were put in properly, everything worked. The repair person also adjusted the (2) screws on the speed control plate so that when you change the speeds via the lever, it all works properly. I didn't find a how-to video covering those adjustments either.

When you shut off speed control sometimes the lever moves back to on and won't stay in stop position
For model number ksm90psw kitchen aid
PartSelect logo
Hello Randy, thank you for your question. You will want to disassemble the upper planetary unit where the speed control lever is. Once inside you should be able to tell if the lever is bent, and not locking in the off position, if the speed control plate is the part that is not holding the lever back in the off position or if the spring the lever is attached to is the culprit. Here are the part numbers you may potentially need. Speed Control Plate PartSelect Number: PS11748567, Control Plate Spring Part Number: PS11740854 and Speed Control Lever Part Number: PS11747016. I hope this helps!

My KitchenAid mixer will not turn on. It was working and then would stall in mid gear. Then eventually when i turned it on there was no power. Not sure what part i should order. We have taken apart the machine thinking it might be the worm gear but that looks in tact. Could it be the electrical?

Hi Susan, Thank you for the question. I would first check the Motor Brush,PartSelect Number PS11753983. They can wear down and cause the problems you are having. See the link below on how to install them. This way you can open the mixer up to see if the brushes are the issue. Hope this helps! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bwnMFrKVK3g

The mixer will not shut off. What parts do you recommend for this repair?
For model number K45SS

Hello Nigel, thank you for your question. If the mixer doesn't shut off, the issue is either the Phase Control Board or the Speed Control Plate. I would recommend replacing those items. I hope this helps!

Hello, initially my KitchenAid mixer model K45SS would mix normally at the required speeds. However, after a period of time mixing on a high speed I sometimes need to revert to only "stir" or a low speed for a different phase of mixing. When I select a lower speed the mixer fails to slow down accordingly and continues to run at a high speed regardless, so I'm forced to turn it off completely to avoid making a mess or ruining the recipe. Does this problem require a new phase control board only, or do I need to order other parts in addition? Also, during my last time using the mixer, I think a bread dough was too strong a load for the mixer and it overworked, causing the planetary to stop spinning altogether. I'm guessing the worm gear might now be broken as well. Do you think any other parts may require replacement? Thanks in advance for your time and have a great day.

PartSelect logo
Hi Kelli, Thank you for the question. For the gears, you will need to open the casing to check for damage. You may also need to replace the Speed Control Plate. The Speed Control Plate controls the speed settings for the mixer. We hope this helps!

Mixer bogs down under load but speed is fine otherwise. Phase control board?? Brushes?
For model number K45SS

Hi Larry, thank you for your question! It sounds like you have gears worn or damaged in the transmission. We suggest you take a close look at worm gear, part number PS11740516, to check whether it is worn or not. We hope this helps.

Is there a video explaining installing?
For model number K5SS
PartSelect logo
Hi Earl, Unfortunately we do not have a video showing how to install the part. However it is a fairly simple installation. First you will disconnect power and then remove all your attachments and bowl from the appliance. Then at the back of your mixer, remove the screw on the top holding your back cover to the appliance. Once you have that removed there are two more screws holding a trim on to the mixer. There are on the bottom left and right hand sides just after you remove your cover. Unscrew those parts as well and gently remove the trim. Then you will remove the wires from the block. I would suggest taking a picture of the wires before removing them. Then it might make it easier for you when reinstalling the part. Once you remove all the wires, unscrew your black plate. Then you will reveal your board. There is one screw holding the board up at the top. Unscrew that and you have removed the part. Follow these steps backwards to put your appliance back together. Good luck with your repair!
