Microwave will not start. Everything works but start button
For model number WMH31017AS1
Hello Sue, thank you for your question. We would recommend testing the door switches first. Sometimes, the door switches will fail and the until will not start if they do not activate. If the door switches are tested and are fine, the issue would probably be with the touch pad or the control board for the unit. I hope this helps!

I purchased the recommended bulb for the countertop light under the microwave. It will not screw into the socket. The serial number is s-n-tr24649898 on the microwave. The base seems to be too large and will not screw in. Do I have the incorrect bulb. This is the bulb recommended by Lowe's as well as this site.

During normal operation the microwave intermittently turns on and off
For model number WMH31017AS1
Hi Dennis,
Thank you for your question. If the microwave shuts off intermittently you may have a defective or loose door switch. There are 3 listed for your microwave and you will need to test them for continuity. Before testing them with a multimeter, unplug the microwave from the electrical outlet. Once the microwave has been unplugged, you will need to remove the cabinet surrounding the microwave in order to access the door switches. Take this opportunity to inspect the door hooks that trigger the door switches to verify that they are activating the switches mechanically. To test the switches for continuity, set your multimeter to Rx1, depress the actuator button and touch the terminals with the probes. You should receive a reading of 0, indicating that there is continuity. If the switch does not have continuity between the terminals, you will need a replacement door switch. We hope this helps! If you have any questions, please let us know.

The nightmare was that this microwave is installed under the cabinet....in order to get to the light bulb I had to pull out my stove then squeeze into the space between the stove and counter....my old microwave light bult was much easier to change.....Shame on Whirlpool for making this so difficult.....must be a better way to cover the light bulb so that we do not need a screwdriver to remove the door to get to the light bulb
This was an over-the-range microwave/hood, so the replacement parts were significantly cheaper than buying a new unit.
Take microwave down (really a two-person job). Remove microwave cover (about 20 philips screws), discharge HV capacitor by shorting terminals to microwave case. Take photos before pulling anything apart. Remove plastic ducting covering part of the magnetron (3 philips screws). Remove old magnetron (4 Torx screws), need to disconnect small thermostat on side (2 philips screws) and replace with new magnetron. Replace HV diode (screw on one end, other end simply plugged into capacitor terminal). Put everything back together and it works fine.
