After starting microwave a couple seconds unit shuts off and panel needs to reset time, date, etc. Why is this happening?
For model number JVM1650CH01
Hello Jim, Thank you for the question. We suggest testing the Thermal Fuse. At room temperature, testing the thermal fuse should produce a reading of zero. But if a thermal fuse is tested when it is heated to its limit, a reading of infinity should be produced. We strongly recommend that you test your thermal fuse at room temperature. I hope this helps. Thank you and have a great day.
How do you replace a thermal fuse in this GE spacesaver microwave?
For model number JVM1650CH01
Hi Jim,
Thank you for your question. NOTE: If you are not comfortable doing this yourself, please get an electrician to do this repair. Before you begin any repair please unplug the appliance from the electrical outlet. Use a Phillips head screw driver to unthread the screws securing the grill. With the screws removed, open the microwave oven door then the slide the grill to the left and lift it up to remove. Next remove the control panel mounting screw then lift the control panel up to detach. Then remove the screw holding the inner access panel and then release the panel from the retaining clips. To avoid injury, you will need to release the potentially dangerous charge from the capacitor by placing a screw driver with an insulated handle across the terminals. Be careful not to touch the metal portion of the tool. Use pliers to detach the old fuse from the noise filter board. Install the new fuse by snapping it into the bracket. Replace the inner access panel and secure it with the screws. Now insert the control panel tabs to the slots in the frame and push the panel down. Secure it with the mounting screw. Insert the tabs of the grill into the frame and slide it to the right. Shut the oven door and then secure the grill with the screws. Plug the power cord back in and the microwave should now work. We hope this helps. Thank you and have a great day!

Turned out the issue was easily solved by replacing a single, inexpensive fuse.
First off, UNPLUG THE MICROWAVE.
The fuse is located under the plastic grill at the top of the microwave. It's held on by two screws. Once you've removed the screws and taken off the plastic grill, you go to the right side of the microwave and remove another screw that holds a small metal grill in place. Removing the small metal grill is probably the toughest part of this repair. You kind of have to rock it back and forth a bit to get it to release. Once that's off, you can get to the fuse. I removed the burnt out one with a pair of needle nose pliers. I also put a small piece of cardboard under the fuse when I did this so I didn't accidentally drop it into the innards of the microwave. I did the same thing when I replaced the new fuse. I then plugged the appliance back in and made sure it worked. Once that was confirmed, I replaced both grills.
The unbelievable happened. Our glass carousel cooking tray developed a crack. Each day the crack got longer. I ordered a new one on Tuesday and it arrived the next morning just before the cracked one completely cracked. I have never experienced such fast service. I highly recommend PartSelect and their helpful service.
