How do you unjam the garbage disposal?
For model number GFC320V
Hi Wayne,
Thank you for your question. If your garbage disposal is jammed, first unplug it from the electrical outlet or turn the circuit breaker off. Before performing this repair turn the garbage disposal on to make sure there is no power to it. Then check the bottom of the disposal for a hex-shaped hole. Insert a 1/4 inch hex wrench into the hole and force it back and forth a few times to free the impellers. Some models may have a reversing switch that will do the same thing. If your disposal does not have a hex hole or you cannot find a hex wrench, put a short broom stick into the disposal. With the with the power disconnected, force it down against one of the blades, and try to rotate the impeller back and forth. If there is an obstruction causing the jam, use a pair of tongs to remove it. NEVER use your hands to remove the object. In some situations, you may have to remove the garbage disposal to remove the jam. For information on how to remove/install your disposal, please refer to your owner's manual. Here is a link from our website that you may use to reference it, https://partselectcom.azureedge.net/assets/manuals/6E8F06EED21BBD769404B6E904503F91EF55814A.pdf. I hope this helps. Thank you and have a great day!

The splash guard for the disposer was deteriorating and kept falling into the disposer and getting chewed up making it even less reliable. I purchased two different 'universal' splash guards at the hardware store. Neither of them fit. I finally crawled under the sink with my eyeglasses and a flash light to find the model number. I searched for the model number on part select and received veery quickly. I just popped it in (less than a minute) and now everything is wonderful. Don't buy a new disposer (my wife wanted me to) buy the replacement part that is giving you trouble at PartSelect!
