This part is located at the bottom of the evaporator. The defrost heater heats the evaporator in the defrost mode of operation to keep the cooling coils from frosting over. The thermostat must be replaced when replacing the defrost heater.

Worked great
The heater was relatively easy to install and corrected the defrost problem. One strange thing the original heater passed the continuity test but when tested showed correct voltage at both ends of the heater.

Refrigerator was cold but bottom freezer was not cold enough to freeze bread or ice cream.
I had previously replaced the defrost timer and thermostat but the freezer was still not cold enough and was frosting up. After replacing the heater element I was disappointed that all the ice melted and the refrigerator was warming up. We were looking for a replacement appliance, but after the second day the freezer and refrigerator were working perfectly! It just took some time to cycle enough to catch up.

What the reason for having to replace the element and thermostat at the same time as recommended in the description of this part?
For model number GB9SHDXPS01
Hello Kelly, Thank you for the question. Whirlpool has updated the heater and the original Thermostat is no longer compatible. Hope this helps!

Is there a video available for replacing this part (defrost heater)? Also, can I get a new gasket for the freezer door, and is there a video for replacing that?
For model number GB9SHDXPQ01
Hi Bill, thank you for getting in touch. Unfortunately, we do not have any video available of the defrost heater, but we will provide some instructions that might help you in replacing this part:
1) First, unplug the appliance.
2) Take out any baskets or drawers and empty the freezer compartment.
3) Remove the evaporator cover by unthreading the screws holding it in place.
4) Now, you can access the defrost heater held by clips. Remove the clips and then replace this part.
The freezer door gasket for your model is part number PS11754806. We have attached a video that might help you in replacing this part. We hope this helps!
This part is snapped onto the top portion of the evaporator. The thermostat sends temperature information to the processor. The defrost heater must be replaced when replacing the thermostat.
This is a temperature sensing mechanism. It can sense the rise in evaporator temperature during a defrost cycle and cycles the defrost heater off after all frost is melted from the coils.
