Washer had water leak in lower front and would not drain.
Laid the washer on its back and found leak in water pump. Found out it was caused by vibration from motor with bad bearing. Removed pump and motor which were held on by clips. Both were removed and replaced without removing cabinet from machine.
First unplug the electrical chord and disconnect the water supply after you have turned it off. Drain all water you can by putting the drain hose into a bucket or water container lower then the drain hose. Remove the two screws at base of the front panel. Then go to the back side of the machine remove the two screws at the top of the back panel, this allow you to remove the top switch panel. Remove the two screws at the bottom outside corners of the back panel and then you can lift the panel up and away from the base. I leaned the back against my dryer because I did not have a helper. Go to the front of the machine, lift the lid and grasp with one hand the machine's sheet metal lift and pull it off the base. There are two metal clips attaching the pump to the motor. The pump slides off and I did not have to remove the hoses. Unclip the electrical connectors from the motor and capacitor. The motor is mounted with two clips with a screw secure it in place. Unscrew and unclip and the motor should slide out. Be sure to inspect the direct drive coupler, the parts not too expensive. I had replaced mine just 4 months ago so I was good to go. Reverse the procedure and you should be in business.

broken pump and burned out motor
The repair itself was very simply, probably largely due to the design of the machine which made getting to, and replacing the two faulty parts a cinch. Just unscrew the two screws on the motor brackets which hold the motor down, and remove the brackets. Then remove the two smaller brackets which hold the pump to the motor. Then remove the two clamps and hoses from the pump. Lastly disconnect the power supply from the motor and the pump and motor will then come out as one unit. Simply reverse the process when reinstalling the new pump and motor. I used a bit of oil to lubricate the new motor shaft but I am sure it probably isn't necessary. The job should take no more than half an hour tops.
Washer tub would not spin or agitate and made a high pitch spinning noise during those cycles.
Basically I followed the great instructions provided on the Part Select webpages. I would consider myself to have more common sense than mechanical skill. I didn't want to have to keep going back to purchase more parts so I decided to buy the motor coupler (under $5), new clutch assembly (Under $30), new motor (under $160). The shaft on the original motor wore down to a cylindrical shape which should have been more of a rectangular shape to fit precisely into the motor coupler and provide the grip strength for the washer tub to spin. Usually the no spin problem is linked to a faulty motor coupler. I was glad that I had to removed the motor to reach the motor coupler because in my case the coupler had not failed. That is when I saw the motor shaft had worn. Since I had all the new parts I replaced them all and since 6/13/19 the washer is running like new. Oh, the problem was most likely caused by someone in my family "overloading" the wash machine one too many times over 11 years. Guy's / Gal's you can do this and save yourself from buying a new washer for between $850 - $1,200. My repair expense was under $240 including tax and next day delivery of my parts. 1. Watch a video on installation, there are many on the internet. (unplug the washer) 2. remove the screws on the back of the control panel to lift the control panel out of the way. 3. use a flat head screwdriver to remove the clips that hold the cabinet to the back panel. 4. disconnect the lid switch from the control panel by removing the clip that connects them at the top of the cabinet. 5. tilt the cabinet forward to remove it. 6. use a flat head screw driver to remove the two clips that hold the water pump to the motor and swing the water pump out of the way. 7. use a nut driver to remove the shipping screw that holds the clips on to the motor. 8. disconnect the wiring harness from the motor 9. remove the two clips from the motor with a flat head screwdriver and remove the motor remove the three prong coupler and rubber gasket from the old motor and put them on the shaft of the new motor 10. remove the 4 rubber pads from the old motor and slide them onto the new motor. 11. insert the new motor into the washer aligning the prongs of the coupler. 12 reassemble the washer in reverse order of disassembly (the shipping screw does not need to be reinserted into the spring clip that holds the motor)

Washer would not drain after wash cycle. Would start to try but stop dead.
Repair went well and relatively easy, but did not fix the problem. Suspect timer switch was the culprit. Nothing was clogged or plugged up. Water pump and impeller were free and clear with no damage or leaks.

My washer still will not agitate, it will spin and drain the water. I have changed the whole agitator kit, the washer drive block and also the motor coupling. Any ideas of what it might be?

Thanks for your question. We would recommend examining the lower agitator base and the upper agitator for signs of any damage. If those are intact, it could be the drive motor itself causing the issue. Make sure it is getting power. If the motor hums but does not run, or if it does not turn freely, replace it.

I smell a burning smell while the washer is in operation. I found the motor is over heating but all other parts seem to be turning freely. I'm concerned because i cant find an indicative reason for the motor overheating. A 175$ motor is half of what i paid for the whole washer only 4 years ago. If it is the transmission that's bad replacing both exceeds the cost of a new one. Suggestions?

Thank you for your question. In most washers, the main drive motor is used to operate the mechanical functions of the wash cycles such as agitation or tumble and spin. It may also be used to operate the drain pump. When a defect or problem occurs in one of the motor driven components it may cause the drive motor to overheat and create a burning smell. If the problem is severe, it may also overheat the motor enough to cause it to fail. A common symptom associated with a failing drive motor is a humming or buzzing noise when the motor is starting. If you are experiencing an electrical burning smell that appears to come from the motor you should first check for any mechanical failures that may be causing the motor to overheat. Check for restrictions to the pump, the transmission and the spin basket, that may put a strain on the drive motor. If the drive motor is unable to turn freely on its own, it is probably defective and will need to be replaced. If your model of washer has a motor capacitor, it may be at fault and can also cause the motor to overheat. Disconnect power to the appliance before attempting any repair. I hope this helps. When the washer is put into wash or spin cycles there is a hum noise and nothing happens; the washer will not agitate nor spin. No burning smell. I see no capacitor. Is it most likely that the motor needs replacement? Is there a capacitor that needs checking and how do that? Thanks for your help.

Hello,
Two weeks ago we went to start laundry and the washer wouldn't start. last week i changed the coupler and clutch in my washing machine and it's still having problems. it'll start but before it gets to spin, it starts to make a funny sound like it's getting stuck and then it'll cut off and won't come back on. i tried to reinstall the parts again just in case i didn't have them on right but i did. so it doesn't even get to spin and the washer is filled with water and it won't drain. do you know what it could be?

The washer goes through all the cycles but when it finishes my clothes come out dripping wet. All the water drains from the machine but leaves quite a bit in my clothes. The heavier the item the more water left in that item of clothing.

Hello, Thank you for your question. If your washer will not spin out all water and clothes are still wet, the drain pump might be clogged with debris or possibly faulty. There could be a foreign object that is stuck in the pump and inside the drain hose. Test to be sure the drain pump is working properly. We hope this helps.

Our washer stopped right before the rinse cycle and turned off. We replaced the timer, checked the lid switch and it still doesn't work. Now it only fills with water, but then it makes a humming noise and then clicks and turns off. What can it be? Doesn't even start anymore. It won't move thru the cycle.

I have a Whirlpool ultimate care 2. When it gets to the spin cycle it will start to spin then it stops but keeps trying. If i let it set for a few minutes then try again it does the same thing. I don't know if it's the motor or what. I hear a hum and it try's to turn. There is also a faint burning smell. Any ideas on what the problem could be? Thanks for any advice.
