worn out lint filter
The new lint filter fits perfectly, however because the handle is much larger than the original it does not allow the filter to close completely...causing a small amount of lint to acummulate on the dryer top.

Motor tried, but could not turn drum
First, I unplugged it and pulled it away from the wall. Then I pryed the front of the top up. It is scary to apply that much force, but the clips did not break. It opens like a car hood. Then I removed the two sheet metal screws that hold the front to the sides. Don't forget to unplug and unclip the door switch wires. Then I lifted the front off the bottom clips. Be sure to hold the drum up when you do this. Three hands will make it easier. Then remove the drum and belt. The belt tensioner will fall off, but that is ok.

I thought the problem would turn out to be the motor, but instead it was the front seal for the drum. It is felt and had broken. It folded under itself and was jamming the drum to the point that the motor couldn't turn it.

I replaced the felt seal, which attaches to the front cover with three clips and also replaced the plastic guides, which clip to the drum. Both were easy to do. I had replaced the rear drum seal a few years ago and so it was ok, otherwise I would recommend doing that too.

While I had it apart, I opened up the back and cleaned out all the lint in the fan housing. I had replaced the heater element, thermal switch and fuse a few years ago, so they were fine.

I also replaced the mosture sensor, just because it only cost $11. I bought a new lint filter, because it had holes in it after 20 years. I replaced the belt, because it was only $10. I replaced the lint filter cover and front door handle, because they had yellowed. I will warn you about the front door handle. It was a bear. I finally had to take the door apart to get the little plastic clip to seat correctly.

Then I put it all back together, which again is easier with 3 hands. Holding up the drum and putting the front cover on the lower clips can be a bit tricky alone. Also, be sure to rotate the drum to make sure the rear seal is not folded under and the front seal is seated correclty.

I fired it up and it ran great, except for the constant whistling. I had wondered what the little clear plastic box in the back did. Turns out it is the lint filter is full whistle warning thing. I took the back off again and found a wire was resting on the flapper door of the box and holding it in the wrong postion. By the way, it is a really irritating sound after the first few minutes. I moved the wire and it works great.

I worked slowly and it went well and was not hard.

Clothes getting torn
Removed the drum from the machine. This involved taking the dryer almost completely apart. However, it wasn't that difficult. The hardest thing was remembering where everything went to put it back together. So far so good. Replaced the read drum seal as this was the most likely cause of the problem. The rollers were replaced too since that was a possible cause and the machine would be apart anyway.

Dryer stop working after I moved the timer setting while dryer was running. So I replaced the thermal fuse while I had the dryer away from the wall, plus the lint filter was torn.
The repair was easy, what took the longest was cleaning the lint from the inside of the dryer and the housing that holds the lint filter. The inside of our dryer is now as free of lint as the day we bought it.To make the repairs I pulled the dryer away from the wall and removed the vent hose and unplugged the dryer from the outlet.I then removed the screws from the back panel so I could replace the thermal fuse. I did this by removing one screw from the thermal fuse and pulled it free from the dryer.I then installed the new thermal fuse and screwed it to the dryer. Then I removed one wire at a time and installed them to the new thermal fuse.I then screwed the back panel to the dryer.Next I removed the screws and panel behind the control panel of the dryer so I could replace the timer.Once I could see the timer I compared my timer to the new one before doing anything else. Then I removed control knob from front of timer.Removed the screws holding old timer in place.Installed new timer to dryer with same screws and installed control knob to timer. Then I removed one wire at time from old timer and installed to new one, I did this until all wires had been connected. Then I installed the panel to the back of the control panel with the same screws.Installed new vent hose to back of dryer and plugged cord back into the outlet. Pushed dryer back into place.Remove old torn lint filter and replaced it with the new one.Wife then tried dryer out and it worked. Dryers been working just fine ever since.

I pulled the dryer out, unplugged it,layed it on it's face,& removed the screws from the back panel. The heating element was at the bottom, unplugged the element ,remove screws (2) & removed the heat element.I spliced the new element in with parts supplied & put it back togather. This dryer is 23 years old ,I have replaced belt ,Idler,& rollers a few years back (from your company). It was top of the line when we purchased & I knew it used to dry clothes a lot quicker. The parts were here in 2 days & the repair worked great.I was looking at 500-700.00 for a new dryer & repaired this one for 73.00.My wife & I could not be happier,Thank You Parts Select for everything !!

What are the dimensions for the lint screen? I ordered this number from a different supplier and it was too wide.
For model number LER8648LW1
PartSelect logo
Hi Maarissa, Thank you for your question. Unfortunately the manufacturer does not give us specifications on their parts, at all. However this part is photographed on a one inch grid background, so that customers can get an approximate size for the part. The only length that I would be able to give you is the width, the part is approximately: 7" wide. Good luck with your repair.
