Start Switch Won't Start Dryer
My wife and I had put up with this silly switch for months where we would continually pull and pull on the switch which used to take only one pull. I found PartSelect on line and chased down the part number I needed. Unfortunately, I misread the correct part number which was different for different serial numbers within the same model number. PartSelect solved this by shipping me the correct one after I discovered my mistake (the part originally sent would now start the dryer as it was supposed to but the timer didn't advance). Anyway, I had reviewed the other "installation instructions" available. It was slightly unclear to me, from reading the other descriptions, of how to remove the timer knob. The knob is in three (3) parts. To remove it, take a pocket knife or other very thin blade and slip under the silver cap and gently pry it off (it's held by four plastic studs which engage into the middle portion of the knob). Once the silver cap is off, remove the middle portion and the inner white portion by lifting straight off. Then, remove the three #10 star screws at the top of the control panel. The control panel then pivots toward you and you can lift it out of the frame to make access to the timer even easier. Next, gently remove the cable harness on the left side of the timer control assembly by depressing the tab in the middle of the connection piece and rocking gently back and forth (it is fairly snug) until you have disconnected the cable. Next, depress the plastic tab on the left side of the timer assembly and gently slide the whole timer assembly to the left (it has a plastic tab on each of the other three sides that slide under plastic holders). Insert the new timer control assembly and simply reverse all of the steps listed above taking care that the plastic feet on the new timer control assembly are engaged under the receiving plastic keepers. This is a really easy repair and took me less than 15 minutes to complete.

Dryer would not start when start knob pulled
Got the part (on time). Removed dryer knob. Removed three screws on top of control panel. Slid old timer out. Removed wiring harness and popped it on the new timer. Reversed the process. Finished. Wife loved it. Got some right then and there ;-).

Knob pulled off and I had been turning it on with pliers
removed the 3 screws holding the front cover on to the timer, unsnapped the timer, unpluged it and plugged in the new one then snapped it back in place. put the front cover back and placed the timer cap back on it works like new now and saved me $140 dollars. Very happy to not look like I am trying to extract a tooth when turning on the dryer

Dryer difficult to start
When the timer was pulled out to start the dryer it would not consistently start up. I generally had to wiggle it around to get the dryer started.

I replaced the timer. To do this you need to pull off the front cover of the timer knob with a small screw driver I then used a needle nose plier to sqeeze together two pieces of plastic that hold the knob in place. The knob is then removed.
Next, there are three screws at the top of the dryer that need to be removed to take off the front cover to the instrument panel.
Removing the old timer is easy. Take off the wiring harness. In removing the harness, there is a small tab that needs to be pushed down.
To remove the old timer, there is a small tab on the instrument panel that holds the timer in place that needs to be pushed down. From there it is easy to slide out the old timer and replace it.

Timer would not shut the dryer off automatically.
Replaceing the timer was very easy. I removed thgree screws from the top panel of the dryer. Unpluged the wires connected to the timer and removed it from the panel. Simply reversed the process to install the new timer. The whole process trook less than five minutes. To think I spent a year fighting with the dryer when the repar only took a few minutes...

Timer on Dryer would not work correctly
I ordered the timer from Part Select (PS2036423)
and read one of the reviews on how to install it.

I just popped out the control knob (three pieces . . . use a flat knife to pop out the rubber face on the knob and then the other two follow), unscrewed the three screws that hold the control panel and pulled the control panel away . . . then I just slid out the old timer and slid in the new one.

Reinstalled the screws and the control knob and Taa Daa, the unit works great . . . I am sure I saved $75-100 by doing it myself.

Dryer would not start
After disconnecting the power supply I removed the 3 screws holding the face plate to gain access to the timer. I then removed the electrical connector and then the timer from the back of the face plate. Installation of the new part was a simple reverse to the preceding operation.

Dryer would not stop running
It took me all of 4 minutes to replace the part much easier than I thought it would be. I use a T-15 Torx bit driver for the three screws on the top. VERY EASY.

I need a timer switch for my dryer. I cant match up the numbers and want to get the right part. Can someone please help me?
For model number MDE6400AYW
PartSelect logo
Hi Robin, thank you for your question. There are two options for timers and they really depend on the first two numbers of your serial number. If the first two numbers of your serial number are 10 or lower, you would need this timer: PS11741133. If your first two numbers are between 11 - 16 or higher than 16, you would need this timer: PS11741127. Good luck with your repair.

There are 2 timers listed for this dryer. How do i know which one i need? The one on the dryer is not marked. My current issue is that as soon as you pull timer knob out, dryer turns on, even when door is open, and even when dryer door switch is completely disconnected. The previous owner said they had just changed the dryer timer because it was not advancing... currently, it seems that the dryer is getting the neutral it needs to run without the wire from the door switch providing it.
For model number MDE6400AYQ and Serial: 28720105JN
PartSelect logo
Hi Ray, Thank you for your question. It looks like your particular model has two different series of knobs. The way that you figure out which one works for you is by the first two numbers of your serial number. In your case that would be 28. You do not want to choose a series number that is higher than 28. You want one that is either 28 exactly or the closest number to 28. In this case that would be series 16. Now it very well could be that your timer is the issue. However it seems like it might be your door switch that is the problem. I would suggest testing that part first to see if it is working. Good luck with your repair.
