The refrig. Coil is freezing up how can I tell if it's the defrost or the heater

Hi Edwin, Thank you for the question. You will need to test the heater with a Multi Meter. The resistance reading of the defrost heater should be between 21 and 27 ohms of resistance. Hope this helps!

Freezer not defrosting, ice build-up behind freezer panel, then fridge warms. I turn off unit and defrost freezer and the unit functions properly for a few days until it freezes once again. Replaced the bi-metal defrost thermostat, but 8 days later same problems. Thank you.

Hey guys i have a Kenmore 106.54599400 side by side fridge. I had issue with freezing coils, sign of bad tstat or element.. I test element and ohms read 23.4. I also tested the original tstat via continuity test with compressed can of air and once it got cold enough, it made contact. So with both of those showing good, is there anything else that may cause the coils to freeze up on this model? I've been looking and I'm not sure but don't think there is anything else that may cause this other than a lack of power to the tstat, which I didn't check. After I replaced the tstat (thinking sure that was it) I buttoned the freezer backup and called it good. That is until I tested the tstat and now showing it was fine. Does anyone with knowledge of this unit have any information on this? I hope the suggestion isn't the control board behind the top inside fridge part. That was already replaced once not 2 years ago or so. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Hello Parrish, thank you for writing. There is more then one thermostat on this model. If you did not replace or test the Bi-Metal Defrost Thermostat, PartSelect Number: PS11750673 I woudl suggest doing so. The best way to do this is to remove the thermostat from the refrigerator so you can control the temperature of the sensor. You can let the sensor warm up to room temperature. With the sensor warmed up to room temperature the sensor should read approximately 6.2K Ohms at 68°F. With the thermistor submerged is a glass full of ice water, the sensor should be very close to 32°F which should read approximately 16.3K Ohms. If the values that you are getting are far off from these readings, then the sensor is bad and should be replaced. If that thermostat is the one you replaced, you may have an issue with the control board, PartSelect Number PS897365. I looked up the part and it is listed as No Longer Available/Discontinued. There are no part substitutions listed. My suggestion here would be to call the manufacturer and see if they can provide you with a substitution for these part numbers. Hope this helps!

Hello David, thank you for contacting us. You model is controlled by a circuit rather than a timer. The manufacturer has discontinued that part and is no longer making it. It would be located behind the control panel for the temperature, it would be 2 small circuit boards with a ribbon connection between them. Good luck with the repair!
