How to Fix A Dishwasher That Won't Dry Properly

by Steve Ash

A dishwasher that won't dry properly can be frustrating and repairing it through a serviceman can be expensive. Even for someone who may not consider themselves handy, repairing a dishwasher is not a difficult process. Below we’ve provided you with a list of the most common parts that fix a dishwasher that won't dry properly. Use this information to help troubleshoot which part is broken, and then enter your model number in the search box to find the right part for you, along with tons of helpful information like our step by step installation videos and instructions.
Heating Element
A malfunctioning heating element may be the cause for dishes not drying. To test the heating element, first make sure that power to your dishwasher is turned off, and then check for continuity with a multi-meter. The terminals for the heating element are located beneath the tub and can be accessed by removing the lower panel. You should also check the condition of the wires and terminals and replace if required.

High Limit Thermostat
The high limit thermostat acts as a safety device that keeps the dishwasher from getting too hot. If the thermostat is malfunctioning, it could shut off the heat before your dishes are finished drying. The thermostat can be found at the bottom of the dishwasher tub behind the lower access panel. You can check for continuity with a multi-meter.

Rinse Aid Dispenser
The rinse aid or the rinse aid dispensing cap could be the reason why your dishwasher is not fully drying your dishes. Without the rinse aid, the dishes will not shed water easily and will not dry properly. First, make sure the rinse aid chamber is not empty. If there is rinse aid in the chamber, then inspect the cap to make sure it is properly fitted and adjusted properly.
